Samsung's Exynos 7 Octa 7870 processor brings its 14nm process to the mid-range

Samsung has announced its latest processor bound for mid-range handsets with the Exynos 7 Octa 7870. The Exynos 7 Octa 7870 is a notable step forward, as it's Samsung's first mid-range chip to use its 14-nanometer (nm) FinFET process — a process that Samsung has only used for its high-end chips thus far. Samsung says that the 14nm process makes the Exynos 7 Octa 7870 much more power efficient, noting that it consumes "over 30 percent less power than mobile SoCs built with 28nm High-k Metal Gate process technology at the same performance level."

Aside from being manufactured using a 14nm process, Samsung says that the Exynos 7 Octa 7870 packs eight 1.6GHz Cortex-A53 cores on board, along with an LTE Cat.6 2CA modem that can handle up to 300Mbps down. The chip can also handle 1080p video playback at 60fps, and supports up to two 16MP cameras.

The Exynos 7 Octa 7870 will enter mass production this quarter, so we should start seeing it in mid-range phones later in 2016.
