Facebook adds new Social VR team, dynamic streaming for mobile and more

During Samsung's press event at Mobile World Congress, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg took the stage to share some thoughts on virtual reality, and how the company sees it going. More than 20,000 360 videos have been uploaded to Facebook already, and hundreds more are being added each day. Since the launch of the Gear VR in November 2015, over 200 apps have been made available for the platform, and people have watched more than a million hours of video in Gear VR.

Technology can be a limiting factor for how the future all plays out, but Facebook has plans to overcome that. The company will be bringing powerful dynamic streaming for 360 video to the Gear VR. This means that it will only load what you are looking at to reduce the amount of bandwidth that is needed. Videos will then play faster and look clearer, and video resolution can be increased by up to four times. Facebook has also created a Social VR team to explore how people connect and share using the current VR technology, and how they can change it to meet the needs of tomorrow's users.

While virtual reality is still a relatively new thing, Facebook has learned a lot already. Plenty of progress has been made so far, but the company is excited to continue pushing forward to give people new ways to connect and share.
